PA Training backs student awards

Journalism students are being given the chance to win work experience at the Press Association as part of a major awards scheme.

The National Student Journalism Awards are being sponsored by Press Aassociation Training for the first time this year.

The competition is on the look out for talented future hacks in the contest which is run by the National Union of Students.

Entries are being sought in 13 categories, which cover everything from best magazine to best reporter and best critic, along with a new category for best student photojournalist.

Prizes include £500 for the winners and work experience at various media organisations such as the Press Association, plus £250 for the runners-up.

The awards will be presented at a glittering awards ceremony in London later in the year, and all shortlisted entrants will receive two tickets to the event.

NUS national secretary-elect Stephen Brown said: "Student journalism is a powerful force in the media world, providing an amazing springboard for students to successful careers across the media spectrum.

"The National Student Journalism Awards, now in their 59th year, are the oldest and most prestigious awards for student media, and give the winners some fantastic opportunities to gain invaluable experience at top publications.

"We look forward to receiving the usual high standard of entries, and to reviewing the entries for our new category this year, best student photojournalist."

Tony Johnston, head of Press Association Training said: "We are delighted to be working with the NUS to promote this excellent awards scheme.

"Finding the next generation of talented journalists is crucial to our business and this is an excellent way of showcasing that talent."

The deadline for entries is August 1.
