Awards boost for Newcastle trainees

TRAINEES from the Newcastle Centre have picked up seven nominations in this year’s prestigious Press Gazette awards.

The Student Journalism awards ceremony on June 30 will see six former Editorial Centre trainees up for seven awards.

Four of them are now working for the Evening Chronicle at Newcastle.

Gareth Deighan is up for Student News Writer of the Year. Amy Hunt has been nominated for Scoop of the Year. Mitya Underwood hopes to become Student Feature Writer of the Year and Craig Hope is in for Interviewer of the Year.

Three of the four, Amy, Gareth and Mitya got their jobs at the Chronicle after paying their own way through the Newcastle course.

Two other trainees, Tom Latchem of the Mirror and Chloe Griffiths, of the Newcastle Journal are also in for awards.

Chloe has been nominated for both News Writer of the Year and Scoop of the year. Tom is also up for Scoop of the Year.

Trainees from the Foundation Course have a great record in these awards.
Last Year’s News Writer of the Year was the Chronicle’s Adam Jupp and before that the Journal’s Rhodri Phillips got Scoop of the Year, News Writer of the Year and the overall title of Student Journalist of the Year.

The very first winner of the Scoop of the Year award five years ago was the course’s Karen Barichievy.

Good luck to all the nominees from everyone at the centre.
